Critical Design Factors of Fabric Covered
Buildings
Key Components:
1. Will the Fabric Buildings You Are
Considering Meet the Building Code?
First and perhaps
foremost, will the fabric covered buildings you are
considering meet the Building Code? You don’t want to
make your choice then find out the fabric building's not
permittable in your local area because it is not
engineered or cannot meet the newest and recently
changed building code.
MBD Buildings ensures your fabric covered buildings will be
engineered to meet and exceed the newest IBC Building Code.
Minimum roof live
load is 12 psf per ASCE 7-05 plus customer specified
collateral load
Ground snow load
capability per code specification up to 100 psf or
greater
Wind load
capacity up to 140 mph 3 second gust or greater
Structural
framework is independent of the fabric & does not rely
on the cover to brace framing members
2. Base and Anchoring:
What is required to put
the building up? Do you need a concrete foundation, an
anchoring system, posts, etc.?
MBD Buildings technical sales personnel will help
you identify your specific fabric covered building's requirements.

3. Steel Framework:
What gauge of steel is
the structure made of and what is the pipe diameter?
This will make a big difference on how your building
will hold up against, general wear and tear. How much
space is there between trusses? This will determine the
wind and snow load that the buildings can handle. How is
the fabric building's frame finished, i.e., hot dipping,
galvanizing, or powder coating? These techniques will
determine if your fabric building frame will resist corrosion.
Hot Dip Galvanizing
4. Cover:
What is the material for
the cover made of and what is its weight? This is
important as the cover makes up your exterior which will
ultimately be the appearance and the part of the
building that must stand up to weather and wear. Is the
material fire retardant? What color options are
available for the fabric building's cover?

5. Building Components:
How is the building held
together? What is the strength of the winch system, what
type of anchoring options are available (ground vs.
wall) and what is the quality of the cable?
6. Warranty, Service
and Support:
What type of warranty is
offered on the building and who are you purchasing the
building from? Local dealers provide excellent service
and support and should know the technical aspects of their
fabric buildings plus be able to consult you on the
building requirements in the area.
MBD Buildings has the answers
to these and any other fabric building questions
that you may have when looking to purchase one of our fabric
covered buildings.
